Walking away from pre-made wigs wasn't the easiest decision.

Why I Walked Away From Pre-Made Wigs

When most businesses find a product that sells, they double down on it.

I did the opposite.

Over the past few years, I offered a variety of wigs through HookedOnBundles. Like many business owners in the hair industry, I wanted to give customers a convenient option. The idea was simple: purchase a wig, install it, and enjoy the look without having to source bundles, closures, or frontals separately.

On paper, it sounded like the perfect solution. In reality, I kept running into the same problem. I couldn't consistently control the quality.

That may sound strange coming from someone who sells hair products, but I've always believed that if I'm going to put my name behind something, I need to feel confident recommending it. And the more I worked with pre-made wigs, the more I realized that confidence wasn't always there.

The Problem Wasn't Every Wig

Some of the wigs were beautiful. The density looked great. The hair quality was solid. The lace blended well. The construction held up.

But then there were the others.

One wig might arrive exactly as expected, while another from the same supplier would have a completely different feel. Sometimes the density wasn't what I expected. Sometimes the cap construction wasn't as secure as it should have been. Sometimes the overall craftsmanship simply didn't meet the standard I wanted for my customers.

When you're building a business based on trust, "sometimes" isn't good enough.

My Customers Deserve Consistency

One thing I've learned over the years is that women notice everything.

They notice when a wig lays correctly.

They notice when the density looks natural.

They notice when the lace blends seamlessly.

And they definitely notice when something feels off.

As a business owner, I don't want customers wondering whether they're getting a great wig or an average one. I want them to feel confident before they even place their order. That level of confidence requires consistency. And consistency is difficult to achieve when you're relying on mass-produced wigs from overseas manufacturers where quality can vary from one unit to the next.

The Hair Was Never The Problem

Ironically, the thing I trusted most was always the hair itself.

The bundles.

The closures.

The frontals.

Those were the products I could evaluate closely. I could inspect the texture, check the construction, verify the quality, and feel comfortable standing behind what I was selling. The more I thought about it, the more I realized I was focusing on the wrong product.

Instead of trying to find the perfect pre-made wig, why not focus on providing the best foundation possible?

The Shift To Custom Wig Construction

Going forward, HookedOnBundles will focus primarily on hair bundles, closures, and frontals. For customers who want a wig, we'll be offering a custom wig construction option through a skilled wig maker who handcrafts wigs using the customer's selected bundles and closure or frontal.

This approach offers several advantages.

First, the wig is built using the exact hair chosen by the customer.

Second, the construction is completed by an experienced wig maker rather than being mass-produced.

Third, customers have more flexibility when it comes to styling, customization, and overall appearance.

Most importantly, it allows me to offer something I believe in. It's often easier to continue selling what's already available than it is to change direction. But I've never wanted HookedOnBundles to be just another website selling hair.

I want it to be a brand that women trust.

That means making decisions based on quality, even when those decisions aren't the simplest ones.

At the end of the day, I'd rather offer fewer products that I genuinely believe in than a larger catalog filled with products I'm constantly second-guessing.

That's why I'm making this change.

Not because pre-made wigs don't work.

Not because every manufacturer gets it wrong.

But because I believe custom construction gives customers a better experience and allows me to maintain the level of quality that HookedOnBundles stands for.

And that's a standard I'm not willing to compromise.
