Holiday salon appointments book up fast, and a stylist can't help when your lace starts lifting at 9 p.m. on New Year's Eve. The good news is you don't need a salon to make a lace front look professional. You need five tools and a little patience.

Here's what to keep in your wig kit, and how to use each one.

1. A canvas head and T-pins

Why you need it: Almost everything you do to a lace front, from plucking and cutting to curling and setting, is easier and more precise when the wig is off your head. A canvas block head holds the wig in its natural shape, and T-pins keep it from sliding while you work.

How to use it: Pin the wig through the ear tabs and the back of the cap, never through the lace. Style it here a day or two before an event, and leave it on the head between wears so it keeps its shape.

2. Hairline tweezers

Why you need it: Wigs come with dense, even hairlines straight from the factory. Real hairlines are softer and a little irregular. Plucking is what closes that gap.

How to use it: Our Precise Hairline Tweezers have a built-in LED light so you can see each hair. Work in small sections and pluck from behind the first row, not the very front. Take a few hairs, step back, look in the mirror, repeat. Thin the part slightly too, so it looks like scalp instead of a line. You can always remove more hair, but you can't add it back.

3. An edge brush

Why you need it: Laid edges and baby hairs hide the line where the lace ends, and they're what make a hairline believable from close up.

How to use it: Our Edge Brush has a fine-tooth comb for parting, a soft brush for smoothing and a pointed tip for shaping swoops. Use a small amount of edge control; too much leaves white flakes and stiffness. Not a baby-hair person? Use the brush to smooth the hairline flat for a clean, sleek finish.

4. A silicone wig grip

Why you need it: A lace front only looks natural if it stays where you put it. A wig that shifts back reveals your hairline, and one that slides forward reveals the lace.

How to use it: Our Secure Wig Grip sits just behind your hairline and grips both your skin and the wig cap, so the unit stays secure without glue or tape. It comes in three shades so it disappears under lace. Combine it with the wig's adjustable straps and combs and you can skip adhesive entirely. (New to going glue-free? See our step-by-step guide to putting on a glueless wig.)

5. A melt band or silk scarf

Why you need it: This is the step that makes lace disappear. Pressing the lace flat for a few minutes helps it settle into your skin instead of sitting on top of it.

How to use it: After the wig is on and the lace is cut, smooth a light layer of mousse or edge control along the lace, then wrap an elastic melt band or a silk scarf snugly across your hairline. Leave it for 10–15 minutes, longer if you have time. Remove it, then lay your edges.

Nice to have

  • Small, sharp scissors to trim lace in a slight zigzag so the edge doesn't look straight
  • Powder or concealer close to your skin tone, dusted along the part to mimic scalp if your knots aren't bleached
  • A silk bonnet so your style and edges survive the night

Getting holiday-ready at home

Do the slow work early. Pluck and cut the lace a week or more before your event, while you have time to fix a mistake. Style the hair on the canvas head a day or two before. On the day, all that's left is grip, wig, melt band and edges, and you're out the door in 20 minutes.

Quick answers

Do I need glue or tape to wear a lace front?
No. A wig grip, the wig's straps and combs, and a melt band to lay the lace will hold most lace fronts securely through a full day or night.

How much should I pluck?
Less than you think. Work gradually and check in the mirror often. The aim is a soft, slightly uneven hairline, not a thin one.

Can I style my lace front with heat?
If it's human hair, yes. Use heat protectant and a moderate temperature, and keep hot tools away from the lace itself.
